For the second consecutive year, Dr. Ignacio Illán Gala has received the Lluís Barraquer Bordas Prize in recognition for the best oral communication presented at the XXII Annual Meeting of the Catalan Society of Neurology held in Barcelona on May 22 and 23, 2018. In this communication, entitled “CSF levels of sAPPß and YKL-40 are related to frontotemporal neurodegeneration and survival in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-frontotemporal Dementia spectrum” Dr. Illán described the clinical usefulness of biomarkers sAPPß and YKL-40 in the clinical continuum of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. Specifically, he highlighted the potential role of the astrocyte activation biomarker YKL-40 as a prognostic marker in these patients. This work has been possible because of the tight collaboration between the Sant Pau Memory Unit and the Neuromuscular Unit of the Hospital de Sant Pau.
In this same edition of this annual meeting, the Catalan Society of Neurology awarded the prize Agustí Codina Puiggròs (ex aequo) for the best article of catalan neurology in the world to Dr. María Carmona-Iragui, neurologist of the Alzheimer-Down Unit (collaborative initiative between Hospital de Sant Pau and Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down), and to Dr. Mircea Balasa (Alzheimer Unit of Hospital Clínic). Their publication, entitled “Cerebral amyloid angiopathy in Down syndrome and sporadic and autosomal-dominant Alzheimer’s disease“, was published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia in november 2017.
