What does the health plan of the Alzheimer Down Unit consist of?
The Alzheimer-Down Unit’s Health Plan is designed to provide medical and cognitive monitoring for adults with Down syndrome, with the goal of detecting potential changes related to Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage and providing specialized care.
People with Down syndrome are at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease over the course of their lives. However, diagnosis can be complex, as early symptoms may be mistaken for changes associated with intellectual disability. For this reason, it is essential to have tailored assessments and professionals with experience in this field.
Who is it intended for?
The health plan is intended for adults with Down syndrome, particularly those aged 35–40 and older, even if they do not have any symptoms.
What does the evaluation include?
The assessment is conducted on an individual basis by a multidisciplinary team composed of professionals in neurology, neuropsychology, nursing, and social work.
The evaluation may include:
- Neurological evaluation
- Neuropsychological assessment tailored for people with Down Syndrome
- Follow-up blood tests in some cases
Depending on each individual’s situation, regular follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor cognitive development and provide personalized recommendations.
Program access
The Health Plan is offered free of charge to adults with Down syndrome who live in Catalonia.
