DABNI (Down Alzheimer Barcelona Neuroimaging Initiative)

In parallel with the care plan, the Alzheimer Down Unit developed a research program, the “Down Alzheimer Barcelona Neuroimaging Initiative” (DABNI), with the aim of studying the natural history of Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome.

It is an intensive study of biomarkers (a biomarker is a biological indicator that can be measured and related to the development of a disease, in this case, Alzheimer’s disease) that includes MRI and PET scan, lumbar puncture, blood, and genetic analysis, as well as sleep studies using polysomnography.

The objective of the DABNI project is to unravel the mechanisms leading to Alzheimer’s-type dementia in Down syndrome, with the goal of advancing knowledge, early disease detection, developing new therapeutic strategies, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families.
