Doctors Alberto Lleó and Ignacio Illán from the Sant Pau Memory Unit have recently published a work in the prestigious journal JAMA Neurology in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania and the Penn Frontotemporal Degeneration Center (Philadelphia, USA).
This work entitled “A two-step algorithm for the selection of neuropathological Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration subtypes” tackle a crucial issue in the field of neurodegenerative dementias: the in-vivo differentiation of the different proteins that accumulate in the brains of the patients with frontotemporal dementias.
In this study, we used data from the brain bank of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the largest in the world, to propose a novel approach to identify the neuropathological Tau and TDP-43 subtypes of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration. This may be a crucial step on the way to the development of specific treatments that can change the course of this cruel disease.
At the Sant Pau Memory Unit we are very happy with this contribution and we hope to continue collaborating with the leading research centers in the world to cure this disease.
