Microstructural changes in the Alzheimer’s disease continuum

A new publication led by the Sant Pau Memory Unit shows that microstructural changes of the cerebral cortex during the Alzheimer’s disease progression follow a biphasic model.

The collaboration between several Spanish centers (Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla from Santader and Fundación CITA-Alzheimer from San Sebastián), led by investigators from the Neuroimage group from the Sant Pau Memory Unit, has resulted in the publication “Cortical microstructural changes along the Alzheimer’s Disease continuum” in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, published online on October 25th.

Microstructural biphasic model - Sant Pau Memory Unit - Alzheimer Research - Barcelona This study is focused on the analysis of cortical thickness and mean difusivity in a group of 326 participants, through magnetic resonance imaging. During the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, we observed an increase in the cortical thickness and a decrease in difusivity, probably due to inflammatory mechanisms. However, in advanced stages of the disease, the cortical thickness decreases and the mean difusivity increases, as a result of the neuronal loss.
