Dr. Juan Fortea Ormaechea, director of the Memory Unit at Sant Pau Hospital, has been awarded the Scientific Modality Prize in the Alzheimer’s category during the Institutional Act of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), held on June 6, 2024, at the Fonseca College of Santiago de Compostela. This prestigious recognition underscores Dr. Fortea’s world-class contributions to Alzheimer’s disease research linked to Down syndrome.
Dr. Fortea has developed an outstanding career focusing his research on the relationship between Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s. His studies have been fundamental in advancing the understanding of the mechanisms and progression of this neurodegenerative disease in a particularly vulnerable population. The award, proposed by the SEN’s Study Group of Behavior and Dementias and its members, reflects the significant impact of Dr. Fortea’s work in the scientific community and his dedication to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life of people affected by Alzheimer’s.
At the same ceremony, Dr. Elena Cortés Vicente, from the Neuromuscular Diseases group at Sant Pau Hospital, was also awarded the Scientific Modality Prize in the Neuromuscular Diseases category, in recognition of her outstanding work in the research and dissemination of Myasthenia Gravis. Both awards highlight the commitment and excellence of the awardees in their respective fields of neurology.
