The Universitat Pompeu Fabra has granted the Doctoral School Ph.D. Special Award to the doctoral thesis in Biomedicine performed by Dr. Oriol Dols Icardo, entitled “Assessing the genetic overlap in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia”.
This doctoral thesis was defended in December 2016. Dr. Oriol Dols Icardo investigated, through different genetic approximations (including second generation sequencing), the overlap in the genetic architecture between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Among other results, he identified a high genetic burden of mutations in ALS and FTD causing genes, in those patients that manifested both diseases at the same time.
